Veteran Homelessness By The Numbers

  • 15,507 experienced unsheltered homelessness; an increase of 14.3% from 2022.

  • 20,067 experienced sheltered homelessness; an increase of 2.6% from 2022.

The data shows that Unsheltered Veterans account for approximately 80% of the total increase in homelessness.

Unsheltered Veterans take up residence in places not usually intended or suited for people to live. This can include parks, benches, sidewalks, underpasses, and abandoned city buildings.

Sheltered veterans generally live in a homeless shelter, transitional housing program, or places that offer real residential amenities such as a bed, food, and hygiene supplies.

Veterans are not the only group affected by the rise in homelessness. The general homeless population increased by 12% in the United States in 2022.

This trend is reversible through programs like Homeless To Housing and our generous supporters.

Homeless To Housing (H2H ) FAQs

    1What is H2H?
Homeless to Housing (H2H) is a program designed to assist veterans who are transitioning from homelessness to permanent housing. The Disabled Veterans National Foundation (DVNF) offers financial aid of up to $2,000 (not guaranteed) to disabled and at-risk veterans. This assistance is intended to help cover initial housing costs or to provide furniture and essential household items, which are purchased by the organization.
2Can I apply for housing assistance if I am not a disabled veteran?
Yes, you do not need to be a disabled veteran to receive housing assistance. All veterans and their families are eligible to apply.
3I am not homeless. Can I still apply?
No, to be considered for this grant, you must be residing in a shelter, couchhopping, at risk of homelessness, in an unsafe living situation (e.g., domestic violence), or experiencing homelessness at the street level. If you are transitioning from one stable residence to another, you are not eligible for this grant.
4How many times can I apply?
You may apply as often as needed; however, you can only be approved for assistance once per fiscal year, which runs October-September.
    5Where can I apply?
Applications are available exclusively online through our grant interface. You can access the application form here. We do not accept any mail-in or emailed applications.
6Do I need and email address?
Yes, a valid email address is required to make a grant account. Since we are a national organization, email is also our primary method of communication
7What documents are needed to apply?
You will need digital or physical access to the following documents: i. DD-214 or Veteran ID ii. Proof of income (e.g., welfare, SNAP, VA benefits, etc.) iii. Disability letter (if applicable) iv. Case worker recommendation letter (optional)
8I was dishonorably discharged; can I still apply?
No; dishonorable discharges, including bad conduct discharges, disqualify individuals from applying.
9I have difficulty navigating the Internet. How can I still apply?
We understand that accessing and navigating online applications can be challenging for some individuals. As a nationwide organization, we experience high volumes of applicants at certain times. Before reaching out for assistance, we encourage you to explore alternatives, such as seeking support from family members, case workers, home aides, or utilizing public library resources. This will help ensure that we can dedicate more time to applicants who may require more personalized assistance.
10If I am approved, what are the next steps?
After approval, you will receive an email from our grant system informing you that a “Delivery Information Follow-Up" form has been assigned to your active VFAP request. You will be asked to log into your grant account and complete the form, which will confirm your delivery address and preferred days and times for grocery delivery within three weeks of your approval.
11It says DVNF purchases the furniture for me. How does that work if I am approved?
If you are approved for furniture assistance, you will be required to complete a “List of Items” follow-up form. Here, we ask detailed questions about your furniture needs, including color, size, quantity, and more. You will also have the option to list any additional items not covered in the application. The items we provide depend on our budget and item availability, but we strive to meet your needs to the best of our ability.
12How long does it typically take for an application to be processed? When can I expect to receive my financial or furniture assistance?
On average, it takes 1-2 weeks to evaluate and process your application. Once approved, the timeline for receiving assistance may vary. Please note that this timeline may be affected by factors such as staff availability, holidays, and office closures. i. For Financial Assistance: Payments are processed through two payment cycles each month, around the 15th and 30th. If your payment is delayed beyond the expected date, a Promissory Note of Payment will be issued to the vendor, confirming our organization's responsibility and requesting that no penalties be applied to the applicant. ii. For Furniture Assistance: Once the List of Items form is completed, DVNF staff will purchase the requested items, which should arrive within 7-10 business days.
13I can’t wait that long for the money.
Unfortunately, we are unable to offer emergency housing assistance. If you are in urgent need, we recommend reaching out to the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans at 1-877-4AID-VET for immediate support or visit the VA Homeless Programs website at www.va.gov/homeless.
14What if I want furniture and financial assistance?
Currently, we are unable to provide both financial and goods assistance simultaneously. We recommend selecting the type of assistance that best addresses your most immediate need.
15I moved into my residence 3 months ago. Can I still receive furniture assistance?
No, to be eligible for furniture assistance, you must either have moved into the residence within the past 30 days or be planning to move in within the next 30 days.
16I will move into my residence in 3 weeks. Can I still receive furniture?
Furniture is only purchased once the veteran officially moves into the residence. If this move-in occurs 2+ weeks after the initial application approval, your application approval will be rescinded, and you will be encouraged to re-apply once you have moved in. This is to ensure all furniture and household goods are successfully delivered to your home.
17I am a case worker and am interested in providing a recommendation letter for a veteran in need. What should be included in the letter?
The recommendation letter should outline the veteran’s current need for assistance and describe any steps they have taken toward achieving financial stability and housing security. The letter should also affirm that the veteran requires support to meet their basic needs.
18What if I do not want furniture to be delivered? Can I just receive a gift card?
DVNF does not provide gift cards at the request of the applicant because they would prefer that over a furniture delivery. We strive to fulfill your needs in the most efficient and effective way possible by delivering the items you request. If you have specific preferences or concerns, please let us know, and we will do our best to accommodate them.
19Do you offer other forms of support for veterans besides housing assistance?
Yes, we offer two additional one-time grant assistance programs. For Veterans experiencing temporary financial hardship may receive up to $1,000 (not guaranteed) from DVNF to help pay for rent or mortgage, water, gas, electricity, auto payments, and more. Please note you cannot be approved for GPS and H2H within the same fiscal year. For Veterans and their families seeking essential food support, DVNF provides free groceries ensuring no Veteran goes hungry. Once approved, the DVNF program team will handle the shopping and delivery for you. These applications can be found and completed on the same grant site previously mentioned.
20I'm getting an error when I try to submit my application. What should I do?
Typically, an error message shows when an application cannot be submitted. This error message typically illustrates that a required question remains unanswered, or a document remains incomplete. Ensure all required fields are filled out and that all necessary documents have been uploaded before attempting to submit again.
21It says I can no longer submit an application because it is past the due date. Can I not apply anymore?
Sometimes, we close the application before the end of the month if there is an extremely high volume of applicants. But do not worry, our applications typically re-open again on the first of next month. You will be able to submit that application come the first day of the following month.
